<description>Since1978Investigative designer using design as a tool for transitioning towards regenerative ways of living and being.

I’m a Colombian investigative designer with a bachelor in product design engineering from Universidad Eafit in Medellin, and a master’s in design from Konstfack University in Stockholm.
After a 10 year practice in furniture design I pivoted towards a more social/ecological, awareness based practice.&#38;nbsp; I worked for two years at SPACE10 as part of the R&#38;amp;D team based in Copenhagen where I researched and devoleped different projects related to water, migration, safety, ageing, and habitat.
I came back to my my territory (Medellin Colombia), where I will continue developing social/ecological, awareness based projects with a focus on regenerative ways of living and being, from one of the most bio-cultural-diverse countries in the world.

The world is running out of fresh water. In fact, global demand for water will exceed supply by 40 percent in 2030 under current consumption trends.
This was the impetus for SPACE10 to research water use across regions. We learnt how people are capturing and re-using water, and reducing their reliance on clean water sources.But what if we make water-saving, filtering, and storage part of our daily routines?The Biofilter Lab is a prototype hand-washing station with a biofiltration unit that demonstrates the potential of saving and cleaning water at home for secondary use.&#60;img width="960" height="540" width_o="960" height_o="540" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/d3e6345fcc5e0c0c0a13b8d9432daa39dcc50ee095fac7fb797ff59f53bd373b/_Biofilterlab-team-presentation-feb-6-3.png" data-mid="190829782" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/960/i/d3e6345fcc5e0c0c0a13b8d9432daa39dcc50ee095fac7fb797ff59f53bd373b/_Biofilterlab-team-presentation-feb-6-3.png" /&#62;
Nature’s way

The Biofilter Lab harnesses nature’s own recipe of capturing and biologically reducing pollutants in water.
It takes inspiration from wetlands, which filter and improve water quality by processing excess pollutants or nutrients found in the water through three processes:
1.&#38;nbsp; Aerobic and anaerobic bacteria living in the root systems of wetland plants help to oxygenate the water and break down chemicals and pollutants into less harmful compounds.
2.&#38;nbsp; The plants use nitrogen and phosphorus from the water as nutrients, draw up through their roots.
3.&#38;nbsp; Water is also filtered through substrates such as sand, gravel, activated carbon, zeolite, and volcanic rock&#38;nbsp;

This entire system is disconnected from the water grid, operates using integrated water tanks, plants, and substrates, and was built using standard parts and
 apparatus.

Between rapid urbanisation and displacement, the number of people living in informal settlements is growing. The UN estimates that by 2030, three billion people (about 40 percent of the world’s population) will be living in informal settlements and need access to adequate housing. Such growth requires thoughtful spatial interventions and radical housing solutions that are bottom-up, place-based and responsive to the needs of residents. How can we better understand the needs and aspirations of people living in informal settlements? SPACE10’s design research lead Esteban Gómez visited Vereda Granizal — an informal settlement in Medellin, Colombia — to explore building approaches that are accessible, affordable and safe.

In Community Urbanism, a SPACE10 film, we unfold how habitat is created through community solidarity, material innovation, and the importance of designing with rather than for local people. The film follows our multiple visits to the Vereda Granizal, meeting with community leaders and residents in their homes, and interviewing researchers, architects, urban planners, NGOs, and public sector representatives to explore habitat solutions together.

Informal settlements are often home to people who have been displaced by conflict, violation of human rights, natural disasters, and anthropogenic climate change. These housing conditions are often composed of inadequate and sometimes unsafe structures, situated at the edges of cities.
‘Informality is a problem of most, if not all, countries in the world,’ says Filipe Walter Correa, Colombia’s director of housing policy in the Ministry of Housing, City and Territory in 2020.

Vereda Granizal is an informal settlement on the outskirts of Medellin, with around 30,000 people and 5,000 houses. Around 90 percent of the community here are people who have been internally displaced due to the armed conflict.

‘Among the largest internal displacement situations globally, Colombia reports the highest number of internally displaced people, with 8.3 million from 1985 to 2020.’ — Global Trends Forced Displacement in 2020, UNHCR

Informal land occupation often forces people to move around the settlement before they can settle down in a more permanent way. The risk of relocation is always present, so people usually wait years before investing in materials for a house. Such temporariness affects not only people’s health and well-being, but the ability to earn an income, and the quality and safety of the structure they call home. The informal status of these settlements means people improvise basic infrastructure services such as water, energy, sewerage, and waste management.

Regardless of the difficult living conditions, when we visited Vereda Granizal, we found people who are optimistic with a desire to continue developing their territory — and stand against being relocated to big vertical social housing projects.

‘When you lose your roots due to forced displacement, you seek for a place to settle, somewhere to build again that territoriality.’ — Diana Àlvarez, resident of Vereda Granizal

Here in Vereda Granizal, houses are constantly changing and being improved through slow, progressive construction using low-quality and found materials. Building times are long as materials are bought little by little, month by month, because of limited financial resources and lack of access to credit. Throughout our multiple visits with the community, we found ourselves asking: how can we facilitate access to a dignified home?

‘This is the way this territory has been built, where the communities, little by little, brick by brick, are building their houses,’ Gómez says. ‘But what if those bricks are not bought, but manufactured here?’

Solidarity in action

The people of Vereda Granizal have a local methodology for collaborative placemaking: the combite. The Spanish expression means an invitation to participate in collectively building their community — from the bottom-up.

It’s centred around sancocho, a traditional soup cooked on firewood made from communal ingredients. ‘The combite is where the community gathers and each person contributes what they have — be it knowledge, materials, or bringing ingredients for the sancocho — then the community works together towards a common goal,’ Gómez says.

The combite reiterates that something as humble as a soup can become an incredibly important tool, uniting a community to build a road, home, shop or public space. With the combite, work can be achieved faster and with more well-rounded solutions thanks to input from multiple hands and minds.

‘Communities in informal settlements come together regardless of their differences to build their territories. Their diversity becomes their greatest strength as they bring different perspectives to face their daily challenges in very innovative ways,’ Gómez says.

Our invitation

Through interviews and neighbourhood visits, we identified that bricks are central to building this territory. They enable the community to build homes, schools, and health centres brick by brick over time — as resources become available. However, purchasing bricks in the city or from small brick or cement block factories is often costly and time-intensive.

We asked the community and its construction workers if we could explore making bricks and do a combite together. The answer was yes! We experimented by combining our tools with the community’s traditional building techniques to make local knowledge more easily replicable, shareable and efficient.
‘It’s a very diverse territory, where there is much knowledge that has been developed over the years,’ Gómez says. By modifying existing open-source blueprints, we built a DIY compressed earth block machine and a wooden mould, so together we could test initial concepts and make bricks.

We tried different recipes by mixing natural and recycled materials together. The best bricks combined local earth with five percent cement as a binder. We began by making one brick every 1.5 minutes with one mould, and realised that with three moulds and four people we could make one brick every 30 seconds.

We learned that by empowering local communities, valuing their ideas, and co-developing them further, we can make a great impact using local resources, labour and knowledge to co-build more resilient and regenerative territories, and improve their quality of life.

A
Story of placement looks at displacement in Colombia during three
different time periods - 529
years ago during colonization, today,
and a speculative scenario in 10 years.
The
project springs from traditional ecological knowledge developed by indigenous communities, and applies it to create
a habitat proposal for a displaced community in&#38;nbsp;Medellin.
 How can
we generate stories of placement in the near future? The Kogi, Arhuaco,
Kankuamo, and Wiwa descendants from the Taironas, have been living in the
mountains of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta after being displaced from the lowlands
during the colonization. They have remained isolated from the western cultures
preserving their knowing and being and living harmoniously with their
territory.&#38;nbsp;Colombia has today around
5.6 million people in a situation of displacement because of the armed conflict, natural disasters, or big land acquisitions by corporations.&#38;nbsp;The project develops a progressive, sustainable, portable,&#38;nbsp; productive, and palafitic housing solution for communities in &#38;nbsp;a situation of displacement, inspired by
indigenous communities from the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in the North of
Colombia.

The learnings from the KogisBy recognising that forced displacemnt in Colombia started + 500 years ago during colonization, and by looking at indigenous communities that have managed to keep their ways of living in harmony with their territories. I have identified a series of srtategies to develop the concept inspired from the&#38;nbsp;Kogi cosmology.
Colombia is a very culturally diverse country, and one of the biggest challenges that communities in a situation of displacement face, is that they find themselves living with a group of people from very different cultural backgrounds, and in a place quite different to where they come from.&#38;nbsp;To facilitate this transition I found the four pillars of Kogi understanding (Origin, Function, Relatedness, and order) very useful towards building a new community, and I have adapted them as follows:
We all have a different origin and come from very different backgrounds.
We all have a function and a reason to be in this new community.
We are all related in mutual sustenance to help each other.
Everything has an order and a reason to be.

The Kogis minimalist approach to life is another important tool, as people who come from rural areas are used to live with the essentials. Suddenly they find themselves in a city ruled by materialism where you are valued by what you own and not by who you are.&#38;nbsp; Adding meaning to your objects by putting your thoughts and beliefs in them adds value to what you have and enables you to have a meaningful life. For example - The loom&#38;nbsp; is seen as the main main metaphor for the Kogi people and it is related in many ways with their cosmic model and to their territory - Each corner of the Kogi loom represents one of the four people of the sierra and the cross beams of the loom represent the paths connecting them. While you go up and down the sierra you are walking on a big loom and therefore you are weaving your life. You also weave your life while you weave your clothes, so all of their thoughts are intertwined in everything that they wear giving a lot of spiritual value to them. Their clothes are made out of cotton cultivated in their lands and turned into yarn with a spindle that represents the origin of the universe.
The community is spread through the Sierra Nevada at different altitudes in different bioclimatic zones allowing them to grow different types of food fostering food exhchange so that everyone has a bit of everything while keeping people connected.
The Kogi architecture is a representation of their cosmic model of the world and every part of their house has a meaning and a reason to be.

The ConceptThe design concept springs from studying The Kogis who have managed to make a successful story of placement in their territory by building a symbiotic relationship with it.&#38;nbsp; Some of the most important findings in the research are intertwined within the development of the design concept.
The walls of the house were inspired by the Kogi Loom which is a rectangular frame with two cross beams. The metaphor within the walls is to look at your house as a loom where you are weaving your life while you live in it.
Having food production units on the roof of the modules fosters food exchange within the community and brings the community together. Having a minimalistic approach to life by only having meaningful objects that have a clear function and reason to be, enables the users to live in a smaller space and not getting dragged into the materialistic way of life lived in the cities. The four pillars of Kogi understanding (Origin, Function, Relatedness, and order)&#38;nbsp;are used towards building a self-sustainable community.
The concept is a progressive, sustainable, portable,&#38;nbsp; productive, and palafitic housing solution for communities in &#38;nbsp;a situation of displacement.
A solution that can be adapted to the different stages of displacement, and that can also become a permanent house.
I began by looking at easily accessible and affordable materials in Colombia, to build up a basic module that could be put together easily, and that could be attached with other modules and allow the house to be improved in a safe way over time - But also that it enabled the users to use their building skills and traditions, making it a solution more closely connected to their roots.

The basic module is made out of a wooden frame built on wood, which can be manufactured with simple tools. All of the parts are made out from 4.5 cm x 4.5 cm x 300 cm standard Pine beams which are common in Colombia.The columns are divided in three segments (roof, frame and legs). The roof section adjusts the hight of the roof for different bioclimatic conditions (cold or warm climates), the frame section make up the main structure together with the joists, and the legs raise the home over the terrain and adapt to the slope, allowing water to flow under the home thus minimizing the impact on the terrain, and preventing landslides that are very common in informal settlements.&#38;nbsp;
The floor is modulated by two 15mm Plywood sheets of 120 cm x 240 cm making a footprint of 240 cm x 240 cm.The basic module is 5.7 sqm and has a 2.8 sqm mezzanine for food production, sleeping space or storage. The half module is 2.8 sqm and can be used as a bathroom or as a kitchen.&#38;nbsp; The modules can be put together in different configurations to adapt to the needs and sizes of the families, or the different stages of displacement.&#38;nbsp;The houses are anchored to the ground with 1mt ground anchors that can be easily put in and out, if the house has to be moved around while providing more stability to the terrain and preventing landslides. The walls are constructed from wooden beam frames, but the covering material for the walls is meant to be with local materials encouraging the use of traditional building techniques, giving the possibility for every house to be unique. Food production modules can be installed in the mezzanine combined with clear roof tiles for the roof section. Food production as a way to build a community is a crucial part of the project as if every module has a food production unit on the top this can become a substantial land to provide part of the food needed by the community and also foster food exchange. The modules come flat packed in a 2.4 x 1.2 x 1.2 mt pallet with 20 cms handles coming out on each corner. The modules are easily put up by 2 persons and it encourages the communities to self-build their houses and make them unique by enabling the use of different techniques and materials for the walls, and by putting the modules together in different ways. The project wants to make the people proud of their house and give them a sense of belonging through these difficult times.

Vereda la Esperanza

The development of the story is a speculative scenario were people build a story of placement with the habitat solution proposed in the project.
This Story starts with a real displacement in January 2021 from different parts of Colombia.
A community of 45 families coming from the Pacific coast of Colombia in the Choco region were displaced due to confrontations between armed groups. These families are indigenous communities from the Embera tribe that have been living in the Choco rain forests for generations. They were displaced to the closest city, Medellin, a City of 3.7 million people - From here the story is a speculation of my version of A Story of Placement.
45 families landed in Vereda La Esperanza where a new project is being put in place to welcome displaced communities and give them a temporary or permanent solution.
Vereda la Esperanza is a land donated by the city of Medellin and it is located in the outskirts of the city. The Vereda la Esperanza has&#38;nbsp; energy, sewage and water provided by the state but it encourages the use of Traditional Ecological knowledge from the people moving in, towards creating a self-sustainable community.
Vereda la Esperanza is home to people from different parts of the country making it a very diverse community with Afro-Colombians, Indigenous communities, Campesinos (farmers from rural areas) and people coming from other urban contexts as well.
Vereda La Esperanza is a mix of public and private actors as the land and public services are provided by the state and the house modules are provided by private companies or NGOs.
When these 45 families arrived to Vereda la Esperanza each one of them was given a specific spot where they could start creating their new stories together with the existing community. Each family depending on their number were given one module for every 3 persons so that they can have a floor lifted from the ground and a roof. In exchange for receiving this piece of land and the first modules they were all assigned different tasks within the community which they had to complete in order to be able to stay there. The tasks went from building infrastructure, to cooking, to child care, to growing food, etc.

After some year’s people added more modules to their houses making them proper homes with bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen, and eating and social spaces.
With time the houses were equipped with rain water collecting systems in the roof and tanks under the houses. They made dry compost toilets to keep the soil in good condition, and solar panels for energy. Some members of the community specialized in making wall panels for the houses using traditional techniques and adapting them to the local resources. Each house specialized in growing different types of vegetables which were later on exchanged within the community. They had chickens under the houses and a lot of the basic needs were met within the work of the community.
After some years the community was informed that the conflict in their homeland had stopped and that they could return if they wanted to. Many of them had made a life on Vereda la Esperanza but some decided to go back. The ones that decided to go back disassembled their homes with the help of the community and the modules were transported by the state to their original homeland where they would put them up again.

Better Shelter has today over 80,000 shelters in 80 counties in refugee camps being used as temporary shelters, schools, hospitals or child friendly spaces. These camps are designed to be temporary while the refugees are given a more permanent solution.

The aim of this project is to look at this situation with a circular approach towards the life cycle of the shelters, and think of other ways to upcycle its materials by adressing different basic human needs.

- When the camps are put down what happens to the shelters? - Could this material be given a second life using it as something else? - Which other needs rather than shelter could this parts be used for? - Can we engage the communities to use their innovation into building new things with unused shelter parts? -Can the shelter materials be used and integrated with local resources to build new things?

By reflecting on this and looking at the shelter parts as a modular construction system that promote reuse and circularity, we developed a series of solutions addressing basic human needs, and created simple and easy to use manuals to enable the refugee communities to build artefacts with basic tools.

&#60;img width="4962" height="3509" width_o="4962" height_o="3509" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/6c4c604b51524f42413383f86d477a66bc8848f5a526459afacd4d78cb06090d/BETTER-SHELTER-FINAL-PRESENTATION-04.png" data-mid="191542126" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/6c4c604b51524f42413383f86d477a66bc8848f5a526459afacd4d78cb06090d/BETTER-SHELTER-FINAL-PRESENTATION-04.png" /&#62;
After the research we decided to focus on water management in refugee camps,&#38;nbsp; where families have to carry water buckets from water sources and often waste part of it during transport and use.
The final concept was two artifacts developed 100% from better shelter parts, The first one CADDY is a wheelbarrel that can transport two 20 Lt water buckets, and the second one is WASH a water station that allows for regulated water disposal into a water sink, and then to a gray water collector to further reuse the water for other purposes such as watering plants.

Instruction manuals for both artifacts were developped as downloadable PDF files for people to download and self build the pieces in refugee camps.

<description>What you see and not see
What you see and not see is a mapping exercise through series of three illustrations made from a day of observations at Rosendals Trädgård in Stockholm, the illustrations show some of the invisible interactions between humans and other than human entities in our daily lives.

Putting Time in Perspective
The different biological timescales of insects, plants, animals, earth and humans represent a challenge to our coexistence
on the planet. “ Over the last 250 years we humans have emptied deposits of oil in the earth’s crust that had
taken 100 million years to accumulate”1  and have treated earth as an endless resource.

We live on a world of immediacy and want everything fast and easy without thinking where things come from, how
much time it took to create them, and what traces or scars they left behind. The Khasis in Meghalaya India “plan their
root living bridges a decade in advance, planting rubber
trees at critical crossings across rivers, and after thirty years
of training the roots across the rivers, a bridge can carry a load up to  fifty people. Under ideal conditions, the lifespan of
a living root bridge can be several hundred years. Over time the roots grow stronger and are low in cost, maintenance,
and embodied energy”2.

Indigenous communities around the world have learned to understand and respect nature's
biological timescales and cycles and have managed to become part of nature by doing so. Most Humans live in cities
apart from the natural world making it di cult to synchronize with nature's biological timescales.

A Boreal forest near Stockholm in Nacka, Saltsjö-Boo. The surroundings of lake Glasbrukssjön are full of life. I spent
around 20 hours on different days walking, sketching, observing, photographing, and  Filming.&#38;nbsp; Everything around me had different lifespans which could go from weeks to years to billions of years. This made me
realize that one of my deepest disconnections to nature is my anthropocentric notion of time, which blurs my understanding
of everything around me.
I was sitting on a rock that was 4.5 billion years old, looking at a beaver that lives 10 years, a dragonfly that lives 7 weeks,
a deer that lives 15 years, a crayfish that lives 20 years, a tree that lives 200 years, and I that will live for around 50 more
years.
I thought that one way to change my notion of time, would be to spend more time in this place, come back more often,
and really observe how nature changes around me. I needed to use as many senses as possible and really focus on the
details because it changes quite slowly for some and quite fast for others.
Having a framed image would enable me to look at things from the same angle and focus on one spot. Drawing the
same image frame several times would enable me to record in images the pass of time in an analogue way.
